The Various Types of Academic Essays
Essay writing is central to your academic studies. You are given simple essays to write in your early school years and gradually you are trained to advance your writing to take on higher academic essays. The various types of essays allow you to hone various writing and thinking skills, preparing you to take on subjects with reasoning and critical thinking.
Students who don’t put much effort in improving their writing often end up relying upon an essay writing service. While it is okay to take outside advice or help in the post writing task, these writers should work on each of the essay types separately and improve their writing.
The various types of essays
There are a total of four essay types that you will be tasked with, in your school and college education. These essay types are:
- Narrative essays
- Descriptive essays
- Expository essays
- Argumentative essays
While the type of essays may remain the same as you advance in your grades, there will be changes in
the subject matter as well as in the style and structure requirements.
The narrative essay is a creatively written essay that is styled and structured along the line of a short story. Just like the short story the narrative will have a story arch with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Your narrative essays can include your personal experience (such as in personal narratives) or they can be completely fictional.
The readers expect you to form a story using all the elements of creative story writing. Make sure that you include dialogues and distinctively portray your main characters, while also painting a vivid picture of the scenes.
Most stories usually follow after an incident or an event that drives the characters into action. The action keeps building until the climax, which marks the resolution. The rest of the story shows what comes as a result of the outcome, and the action slowly dies down.
The descriptive writing tests the essay writer ability to describe things and paint a picture of various scenes and scenarios. The descriptive writing allows the reader to bring the senses to life. While you are accustomed to describing the things around you with the use of sight and sound, make sure that you also include the rest of the senses. By describing the things or the subject using the sense of smell, touch, and taste you give the readers extra input that they normally are not used to. This allows you to make vivid descriptions.
The descriptive writing can be anything from describing a process, a routine, a place, etc.
Argumentative essays are one of the advanced essay types. They involve the writer to produce each type of academic writing from descriptive, analytical, evaluative, to critical. The argumentative essays take on arguments that either support an argument, bridge two arguments together, or come up with a new argument.
For each argument, you will have to support your ideas and points with evidence from scholarly sources. You will further provide your evaluation and analysis of how your arguments succeed where others fail. Each argument thus leads to a formal conclusion.
The expository essays focus on providing the readers with analysis and evaluations of the subject. You will explore the subject matter and divide it into its components, while you explore the relationships between each part. These relationships will then help you to write my essay and make useful connections and provide analysis.
The expository essays are most common are:
- Cause and effect essay: This type explores the causal relationship of causes, the events, and their outcomes.
- Compare and contrast essay: This essay compares two subjects together and provides an analysis of various things they have in common and in contrast to each other.
